Dr. Robert McBroom
April 28, 1932 - May 26, 2008

Dr. Robert Davis McBroom, III, 76, of Gautier, MS, was born on April 28, 1932, and went to eternal rest on May 26, 2008.  He practiced medicine for almost 50 years with 39 of those years being spent in Jackson County.  His love and care for his patients was one of his greatest attributes.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved sports of all types.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert D. McBroom, Jr. and Elesa Woodruff McBroom; and his only sister, Maqueda McBroom Strickland.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Kay Newman McBroom;  five children, William C. (Veronica) McBroom of Charlotte, NC; James Leighton (Donna) McBroom of Gautier, MS; Layna McBroom (Jimmy) Lassiter of Gautier, MS; Susan McBroom Sloan of Jackson, MS; and Davis McBroom of Orlando, FL; 10 precious grandchildren; Tara, Laken, Taylor, Gracie, Lydia, Bentley, Owen,  Lindsey, Blake and Mason; and one great grandchild, Justin.

Dr. McBroom served in the Korean War from 1950-1952 and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mississippi State University in 1955.  He continued his education at Millsaps College to get any courses necessary for medical school and then graduated from the 1st medical school class at University of Mississippi in Jackson, MS, in 1959.  He served on the vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Woodville, MS and St. John’s Episcopal Church, Pascagoula, MS, where he was an active member.  He was a past Stewardship Commissioner for St. John’s, Pascagoula.  He was also a Licensed Lay Reader for the Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi.

He was an active member of Singing River Hospital Systems from 1969 until his death.  He served as Singing River Hospital System’s Chief of Staff, chair of the Executive Committee, President of Jackson County Medical Foundation, Medical Director of Plaza Community Living Center from 1977 until his death, chair of the Internal Medicine Committee four times, a member of the Singing River Hospital Executive Committee, Medical Director of Amedisys Home Health and a member of Singing River Hospital Medical Ethics Committee.  He held memberships in Singing River Medical Society, the Mississippi State Medical Association and the American Medical Association.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 30th, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Pascagoula, MS, with a Memorial Service and Committal immediately following at the church.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. John’s Episcopal Church Outreach Program, The Hospice of Light or The American Cancer Society.
