Gretchen Eugenie Murray Cunningham was born on March 29, 1946, in Pascagoula, MS, to the late John Francis Murray and Helena Theresa Castanera Murray. She died on February 14, 2019, of complications from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. As she lived her life with grace and dignity, she died with that same grace and the assurance of love from her family and friends.
After graduation from Pascagoula High School in 1964 where she received many honors, she graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi. She was a Medical Technologist at Singing River Hospital. Loving her work, she continued her education and earned her Masters in Technical Education. For 26 years she was an instructor in the Medical Lab Program at MGCCC. She touched the lives of many students whose appreciation for her was expressed throughout her life.
Besides her parents, Gretchen is preceded in death by her sister and brother-in law, Patsy and Jack Borho.
Gretchen is survived by her two sons, Bradford Cunningham and Gregory Cunningham whom she adored, and their wives Paula and Christine Cunningham. She was beloved “Geet Geet” to her granddaughters, Amelia Eugenie and Fiona Colleen Cunningham. Surviving also are her sisters, Bonnie (John) Glossinger, Kay (James) Gully, Christine (Rusty) Lachaussee. She is also survived by a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and particularly her “Goula Gals.” Gretchen was fortunate enough to spend her last decade making wonderful memories with Richard Atwood.
Gretchen was a life-long parishioner of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, 10am-12:00 noon, at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula and a funeral Mass will follow at 12 noon. Interment will be at Krebs Cemetery following the service.
