Vernon Leon Smith Sr. passed away unexpectantly on Friday, March 29, 2019 in Ocean Springs, MS.
Vernon was born September 1, 1943 in Picayune, MS to Nathaniel and Susie Smith. His family moved to the Jackson County area when he was 15 years old and he never left. He quickly became a High School basketball start at Our Lady of Victories Catholic School.
Mr. Smith painted houses for 45 years, finding satisfaction in a job well done. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Ocean Springs for many years. He is described as a quiet, sympathetic, kind spoken man that was fun to be around. He cared for people and was loved by all those that knew him. He chose words of kindness rather than words of judgment and condemnation. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Norma Bosarge, Bob Smith, Thelma McCullough, Rachel Charlton, and Nathaniel Smith.
He is survived by a son; Vernon Smith Jr. and his wife Beth; daughter, Lisa Harrison all of Moss Point, MS; one grandchild, Mallory Smith; one brother, Billy Smith.
Visitation will be Monday, April 1, 2019 at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home from 3:30 -5:00pm with Funeral Service to follow with Rev. David Newton officiating. Private Interment. Condolences may be expressed online at www.obryantokeefe.com.
