Alfred Megehee “Mac” Nelson passed away on September 20, 2023, at Diversicare of Moss Point under hospice care. Mr. Nelson was born in Escatawpa, MS, on July 19, 1942. At the age of six, his family moved five miles down the road to Pascagoula, MS, where he attended Central Elementary, Pascagoula Junior High, and graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1960. Mr. Nelson obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech and theatre from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1964 and a Master’s degree in educational counseling from Mississippi College in 1971. He also spent one year working toward a master’s degree in Christian Education from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, Atlanta.

Mr. Nelson taught at Vigor High School, Prichard, AL, for one year, then spent the next five years teaching at Callaway High in Jackson, MS. Afterward he served as admission counselor and director of musical theatre at Belhaven University in Jackson for four years.

He moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career in 1975 and spent the next 36 years in Hollywood, Nashville, and New York before retiring to Mississippi. During retirement he worked part time for Pascagoula Parks and Recreation as a museum tour guide.

Mr. Nelson worked as an actor with Jerry Lewis, Madeline Kahn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Meadows, to name a few. He also spent four years as artistic director of the lamb’s Resident Theatre in New York.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pascagoula, MS, where he sang in the choir, the men’s quarter, and taught small study groups.

Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents Charles Lilliard “Lynd” Nelson Sr. and Mildred Megehee Nelson; his brother Charles Lilliard Nelson; and his sister Janice Nelson Hicks and brother-in-law Jack Rush Hicks.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his sister-in-law Brooks Nelson of Gulf Shores, AL.; his nephews Rush Hicks (Pam) of Murfreesboro, TN., Forrest Nelson (Tokiko) of Tokyo, Japan, and Parker Nelson (Crystal) of Foley, AL.; nieces Margaret Hicks of Statesboro, Ga. and Julie McCraney (Chip) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL.; and a host of great nieces and nephews. They were always excited for him to visit through the years and delighted in his wonderful stories throughout his career.

Visitation will be Friday, September 29, 2023, 9:00-10:00, at First United Methodist Church in Pascagoula.  Funeral Service will begin at 10:00am with Rev. Eddie Kirby officiating.  Interment will follow at Machpelah Cemetery in Pascagoula.  You may send condolences to his family or share a memory on the Tribute Wall.  Pallbearers will be Will Hook, Dell McCraney, Parker Nelson, Milton Chancellor, Don Smith, and Rich Swingle.
