Arlis Elvin Gray passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025 in Ocean Springs, MS.
Arlis was born August 5, 1932 in Meridian, MS to Leo Vardaman and Alma Bernice Gray. He was married to his wife, Elma Ruth, for 67 years and together they raised 7 children. Arlis worked in the Quality Assurance Department for Ingalls Shipbuilding where he retired after 42 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, chosen as Grand Knight of the Year for Mississippi, and a member of Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and was a talented carver. He created many unique items over the years, including back scratchers, which one grandchild called “scratch backer”. Arlis persevered through many health issues, including cancer, but remained active and creative.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elma Ruth; a son, Arlis “Pat” Gray; a grandson, Jesse Hughes; siblings, Leo and Kay.
He is survived by his children, Gary Gray, Mike Gray (Ava), Laura Lasker (Danny), Susan Hamilton (Gary), Lisa Gray Hughes, Joel Gray (Nicole); daughter-in-law, Diana Gray; an abundance of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 7, 2025 at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula from 11:00am-12 noon. The Funeral Service will follow in the chapel at noon. Pallbearers are Joel Gray, Michael Gray, Gary Gray, Scott Martin, Josh Wetterling and Brayden Wetterling. He will be laid to rest beside his true love, Elma Ruth at Machpelah Cemetery.
