Betty "Betty Boop" Latimer Obituary

Betty Jean “Betty Boop” Hill Latimer, age 89, of Jackson County, MS passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Riverchase Assisted Living in Gautier, MS.  She was born March 1, 1935 as the oldest and only daughter of 7 to Oscar and Mildred Hill.  She was the perfect older sister that could keep all those boys in line.

Betty worked as a seafood worker from a young age and shelled, shucked and cleaned shrimp, oysters and fish.  She had a great talent for picking crabs and the ability to handle thousands of pounds.

She married Henry Gibbs and had two daughters, Shelia and Lena.  Together they worked hard in the family business of restaurants. Betty could cook anything from a limited supply and enjoyed baking cakes and pies.  Her biscuits will always be remembered by so many that enjoyed her recipe.

Betty learned to crochet from her cousin, Grete, and had stitched lots of dollies and baby dolls in her down time.  She loved the patterns she created but wasn’t always fond of sewing them together.  Once completed, she was over joyed and happy by the finished product.

She really enjoyed singing and playing her harmonica and playing Bingo. Betty was always ready to lend an ear to anyone and prayer was something she would always say was “the best”.  Talking to God was the best answer to all of problems because He always gave everyone the best answers.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Eugene Latimer; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila Gibbs and Eugene Bernard; son -in-law, John Kuhn; grandson, William Kuhn; two brothers and one sisters-in-law, David Hill and Raymond Hill (Betty Jane).

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Henrietta Gibbs-Kuhn; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Rufus Hill (Wanda), Douglas Hill (Francis), Cecil Hill and Gary Hill (Connie); sister-in-law, Ethel Hill; 5 grandchildren, Catherine Bulzomi, Kelly Weaver, Aaron Bernard, LaResa Keenum (Don), Shane Bernard (Tracy), 12 great- grandchildren and 5 great- great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 18, 2025, 12 noon – 1:00pm, at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula.  Memorial Service will begin at 1:00pm with Rev. Billy Jowers and Rev. Jimmy Self officiating.
