Carl Megehee Obituary

Carl Albert Megehee was born July 4, 1926 in Escatawpa, Mississippi to Alfred Forest Megehee and Mary Moody Dickson Megehee (Humphreys). Carl died on June 26th, 2024 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

During WWII, Carl served in the US Navy. Carl was a lifelong Jackson County resident and majored in Latin for his undergraduate degree at Ole Miss. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After graduation, he then studied law at Ole Miss. Later, he served as President of the University of Mississippi Law Alumni.

Carl was practicing law in Pascagoula when he met a young lady named Sara Murphey at the Longfellow House swimming pool. They were later married on December 29, 1954 in Macon, MS at the Church of the Nativity.

Carl practiced law for 46 years. Meanwhile, he was very involved in other aspects of the Pascagoula community. He was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He also served as a board member of the Pascagoula Historical Society. He was an organizer of First Federal Savings Bank of Pascagoula/Moss Point in 1955. He also served on the board of the Pascagoula/Moss Point Bank and Hancock Bank for 42 years.

Further, Carl was the Attorney for the Jackson County School Board, Board of Supervisors, and the Jackson County Port Authority when Chevron Refinery and Ingalls West Bank Shipyard were established. He was also a President of the Pascagoula Rotary Club and a member and past National President of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.

Carl had many hobbies, including gardening, running, and sculpting. He sculpted a life-sized bronze pelican that first stood in his Beach Boulevard front yard, and was later relocated to Pelican Landing, where it still stands today.

Carl was known to be very involved in the community, though, according to his family, his greatest role in life was that of father and grandfather. Carl and Sara raised three daughters, who each grew up to follow in their father’s footsteps in terms of education and community service. Carl later became the proud grandfather of four more girls. All eight of his girls adored him and enjoyed all of the many family memories together in Pascagoula and elsewhere. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Sara, as well as his daughters, Maribeth (Peter) Howard, Carol (Arch) Woodside, and Jane (William) Douglas; and granddaughters, Sara (Garrett) Morris, Caroline (Skylar) Hansen, Elizabeth Douglas, and Haley (Rod) Kellogg; and grandsons Marcus Howard, Kristopher Howard, and Nicolas Howard; and great-grandchildren Ryder and Rhet Howard, Maddox and Alexis Morris, Saylor and Ollie Hansen, and Liam, Colvin, and Lilly Kellogg.

The family would like to give special thanks to Carl’s caregivers Felicia, Octavia, Jetta, Kathy, Kayla, Latoya, Tina, Candy, LaShonda, Sheila, and Sandra for the care they gave him during his final months.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3507 Pine St. Pascagoula, MS. Visitation will begin at 9:30am. The service will be at 10:30am, followed by burial in Machpelah Cemetery.
