Carol Sue Sumrall, 74, was born April 29, 1949 in Gulfport, MS to Claude and Grace Lewis. She passed on to eternal Glory in the early morning hours of April 30, 2023 in Pascagoula, MS surrounded by her devoted husband and two sons. In 1976, she married the love of her life Rick, to whom she would remain devoted for the next 46 ½ years. She was to the core a caregiver to others, whether it be to those that preceded her to Heaven or to those surrounding her until the end. When her boys were young, she instilled the virtues of faith and compassion, and ensured that they were raised in the watchful light of Jesus. Otherwise, she, along with Rick, was rooting for them on the sidelines of the baseball field, football field, and basketball court. Once they began their own families, she was a constant source of support for her grandchildren, whether it be on her numerous trips to Jackson in the early years or a weekend at Maw Maw and Paw Paw’s house in the later. She always had an art project ready for the girls, and was a never ending dispenser of ice cream (at any hour of the day). She was always the last to sit down at a family meal and tolerated the guys watching the game instead of helping with the dishes. Her legacy is and will be one of the unending and unwavering love of a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, as well as special sister-in-law Francis Vanderford and nephew David Mertz.
She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Sumrall; son Dr. Richie Sumrall (Jennifer) of Ocean Springs, MS; son Jason Sumrall (Whitney) of Biloxi, MS; step-daughter Lisa Jones (Brian) of McAllen, TX; grandchildren, Trace, Trina, Cade, Maddie, Webb, Maddux, and Della; great-grand daughter Reese; sister Claudia Lewis of Biloxi, MS and sister Danna Bounds (David) of Biloxi, MS. In addition, she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sue’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in continuation of her legacy of caring for others.
