Charles Preston Briggs III passed away peacefully at his Pascagoula home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
Charlie was born in Moss Point, Mississippi, on June 2, 1940, to parents Charles Preston Briggs Jr. and Jane Eloise Abbott. After graduating high school, Charlie joined the Marine Corps, where he spent five years traveling the world. Following an honorable discharge, Charlie worked at Ingalls Shipbuilding until his retirement. He later co-founded the Downtown Jazz Club with Martha Mae Gordon, whom he would later marry.
He is survived by his son, Jason Briggs; daughter, Stephanie Batton; grandchildren, Preston Briggs, Olivia Batton, Gracie Batton, and Sophia Briggs; and his sister, Judy Brown. He was preceded in death by his brother, Barry Briggs, who passed away in 2022.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Hospice of Light and extend special thanks to the many friends and caregivers who supported Charlie over the years.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m. at the Downtown Jazz Club in Pascagoula, MS.
