Don Monroe Stewart, age 71, of Pascagoula passed away on Friday, September 6, 2024. He was born January 15, 1953 in Poplarville, MS.
He is preceded in death by parents, Dr. Leo O. Stewart and Mary Gore Stewart; step-daughter, Lori Davis; dear friends, Michael (Robi) Robichaux, and Benny Bryant.
Don was survived by his wife of 46 years Joanne Cox Stewart; stepdaughter Cheryl Lynn Taylor; granddaughter, Cortney Leigh Davis; Sister, Mary Alice Barry (Mike); and Brother, Van O. Stewart. Nieces and Nephew; Sarah E. Prestridge (Jeff), Laurie Green Grandchildren: Mark De Hertogh (Kelly), Lori Beth De Hertogh (Charles). Grand Nephews and Nieces; Seth Welsh, Jackson McDonald, Jason Lee, Juliana Prestridge and great grandchild Caroline De Hertogh Radcliffe.
Don was a career Law Enforcement Officer in Jackson County for over 40 years. Working for the Gautier Police Department as Chief of the Criminal Investigation Division. He finished his Law Enforcement career with the Jackson County Sheriffs’ Office. Don received initial LEO training through MLEOTA, an Associate’s degree from MGCCC in Law Enforcement, a Bachelor’s Degree from USM in Criminal Justice. He was extremely proud of attending and graduating from the FBI National Academy. Where many apply but few are chosen. Don attended numerous training seminars, classes and last but not least OJT. He received many awards, certificates, trophies and commendations. Lest we not forget the most important award all Law Officers receive during their careers. The proverbial “Attaboy”. His highest rank achieved during his career was Chief Deputy of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Stewart was liked and loved by all who knew him. Someone said “that he was the most compassionate COP the good Lord put on this earth.” Chief Stew had a good sense of humor which was displayed numerous times, at the glee of some and dismay of others.
Visitation will be Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, 2:00-4:00pm at O’Bryant-Funeral Home in Pascagoula. Funeral Service will begin at 4:00pm with Rev. Bryan Cirlot officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark Lee, Mike Downs, Jeff Prestridge, Seth Welsh, Jack McDonald and Mark De Hertogh.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Fearon Jenne, Brian White, Glenn Rivers, Randy McClendon and Randy Oliver.
