Elizabeth Merlene Burt Smith

Elizabeth “Merlene” Smith, age 95, passed away on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021 in Mobile, Alabama.  She was born July 5, 1926 in Marion County, Mississippi and graduated from Draughn’s Business College where she met her husband, Clifton Smith.  Merlene devoted her life to her family and enjoyed reading her Bible, cooking, sewing, playing Rumikub games with great friends, and puzzles.

She is preceded by her husband of 70 years, Clifton Smith; brother, Winfred Burt.

Merlene is survived by her two daughters and one son, Cheryl S. Baxter (Harold), Mobile; Meredith C. Smith (Jessica), Mobile, AL; Elizabeth A. Hinton (Gerald), Biloxi; 7 grandchildren, Melissa Herbert (Randall), Chris Bond (Christina), Melanie S. Robinson(Scott), Ashley Powell (Seth), Brad Smith (Jill), Justin Baxter and Vicki Lovingood  (Jeff); one sister and two brothers, Ruth Hazel Carver, East Point, GA; Davis Burt (Louise), Silver Creek, MS; Tom Burt (Laura), Rutherfordton, NC;   17 great grandchildren, Garrett, Laurin and Lynsi Collom, Taylor and Ella Robinson; Matthew, Andrew,  Luke and Elijah Smith; Cassidy, and Catie Bond; Carmen, Cruz, Lola and Daniel Powell; J.D. Rose Lovingood; 3 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, 10:00-11:00am, at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula.  Funeral Service will begin at 11:00am in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow at Griffin Cemetery in Moss Point.
