Guy Moore Obituary

Guy Wilson “Guy” Moore, Jr., 73, of Pascagoula, Mississippi, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, September 30, 2023. Guy was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 15, 1950, to the late Guy Wilson Moore, Sr. and Jessie Eudora Scott Moore. Guy moved with his family to the Pascagoula-Moss Point area in 1960 where he attended the Pascagoula-Gautier School District for a short time before entering the Moss Point School System as a fifth grader.

Guy would go on to graduate from Moss Point in 1968 having achieved recognition for his athletic and scholastic accomplishments as well as his natural leadership skills. Among his achievements at Moss Point High, Guy was elected Student Body President and Mr. MPHS by his peers, selected by the school faculty to the Hall of Fame, graduated as the senior class salutatorian, won numerous statewide oratory awards, and was selected to attend prestigious Boy’s State. On the basketball court, Guy was a pivotal player for the School’s starting five.

He attended Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College before transferring to The University of Mississippi where he obtained his major in Accounting. While at Ole Miss, Guy was an active member of Sigma Nu fraternity and was selected to several honors societies including Beta Alpha Psi, Phi Kappa, Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa.

Following his graduation from Ole Miss in 1972, Guy went to work in the New Orleans’ office of Deloitte, Haskins and Sells (now Deloitte), a highly respected international auditing, accounting, and consulting firm. Guy passed the Certified Public Accountant exam that same year winning the Silver Medal for the second-highest score in the State. He would go on with Deloitte to make partner in 1982 and would remain with the firm until his retirement in 2012.

On July 15, 1972, Guy married the love of his life, Lucile Lewis “Lucy” Leatherbury of Pascagoula. This blessed union produced two sons, Thomas Christian Moore and Benjamin Lee Scott Moore. During his career Lucy and the boys would pick-up house and move around with Guy as he was assigned to other Deloitte offices in Florida, Georgia, and Connecticut.

Following his retirement, Guy and Lucy came back to Pascagoula to enjoy a serene life on the Coast where Guy remained active, having served or was serving at the time of his death as an Elder, Sunday School teacher and financial advisor for his Church, a board member with the Jackson County Utility Authority, Home of Grace, Ole Miss Alumni Association, the University of Mississippi Foundation, and the Patterson School of Accountancy Advisory Board. One later in life honor bestowed upon Guy was being named to the esteemed Ole Miss Patterson School of Accountancy Hall of Fame in 2013.

Never forgetting the humble but loving background from which he came, his deep desire to help others, and his love for Ole Miss, Guy and Lucy established an Endowment Fund at Ole Miss with the goal of financially aiding students attending Mississippi junior colleges who wanted to obtain an accounting degree from Ole Miss. This is just one example of Guy’s charitable nature, a part of his life’s principles.

Guy was proceeded in death by his parents and his sister, Janice. He is survived by his wife Lucy and their two sons, Christian of New Orleans and Scott and daughter-in-law, Gretchen, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, one brother-in-law, Thomas Seay Leatherbury, Jr. of Pascagoula, four deeply loved nieces and nephews,  and of course, his fraternal brothers of the Ole Miss Chapter of Sigma Nu.

Visitation will be from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 5, 2023, at the First Presbyterian Church of Pascagoula. A memorial service will follow at 2:00pm with Pastor Matt Mitchell officiating. A private family only internment will be held at a later time.
