Hortense Elizabeth Browning Couey passed away on Wednesday January 31, 2024 in Pascagoula, MS at the age of 76.
Harty, as she was known, was born on January 3, 1948 in Gulfport, MS to Jesse Robert Browning Sr. and Virginia Elizabeth Ladnier Browning. She lived in many states as well as the country of Columbia as a child, due to her father’s work as a senior surveyor/engineer. She met Charles Couey when they were both in 9th grade at Pascagoula Junior High. After graduating from Pascagoula High School in 1966, she married Charles on November 5th of the same year. While Charles served in the United States Navy, Harty worked as a head bank teller at Merchants and Marine Bank. Harty navigated her role as a military wife and mother with poise and grace. She was a schoolteacher at Gautier Elementary and co-owned a boutique “The Lady Bug” with best friend Carol Johnson Cuevas. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks Club and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Eventually Harty embarked on a new adventure, moving across the country to Utah and then California with Charles and their girls—then, aged six months and twelve years. In Utah she was able to work alongside Charles as an Office Manager and Field Accountant, and in California she was an Assistant Manager of The Looking Glass. Harty was a talented artist, seamstress and crafter. She was a devoted and loyal friend to many, thoroughly enjoying her outings and often surprising her friends with “happies.” She enjoyed going to athletic games and Broadway plays, visiting museums, and traveling. She even raced a corvette and won a trophy. Harty was a huge supporter of her daughters’ activities, frequently attending band functions and cheerleading events. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Pascagoula.
Harty was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 57 years, Charles Donald Couey of Pascagoula, MS, as well as their two daughters, Laura Couey (and Eugene LaCaze) of Biloxi, MS and Amy Couey of Chicago, IL; a brother, Jesse Robert Browning Jr and his wife Lisa of Jackson, MS; niece, Lauren (and Jim) Rabalais of Youngsville, LA; nephew, Elliott Browning of Jackson, MS; and nieces Donna (and Greg) Phelps of Virginia Beach, VA; and Theresa (and Chris) Copeland of New Orleans LA. Beloved and cherished by all family and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 3, 2024 at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula MS from 11:30 am until 12noon. The Funeral Service will follow in the chapel at 12noon and conclude at Machpelah Cemetery where she will be laid to rest at the foot of her father.
