Mrs. Joanne Lee Stewart, beloved wife of Don Monroe Stewart, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. Joanne was a native of El Paso, TX, and served as a majorette in high school. Joanne earned her B.A. and M.A. from the University of South Alabama. Upon graduating, Joanne taught literature and English grammar at MGCCC in Gautier, MS. Joanne was also a Professor of English at the University of South Alabama during her career. Additionally, Joanne was employed at the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, where she met her husband, Don. She served at the Adult Detention Center as a shift lieutenant in Pascagoula, MS, as well. Joanne was a warm, charismatic person loved by her family, friends and students. Joanne was a very talented dancer, choreographed major productions, as well as authored and directed community theatre productions throughout Jackson County.
Joanne is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Don M. Stewart, that recently passed on September 6, 2024; daughter, Lori Lee Davis; parents, Charles Leroy Cox and Dorothy Jean Sollie- Peters Cox.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Lynn Taylor; granddaughter, Cortney Leigh Davis; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Barry (Mike). nieces and nephew; Sarah E. Prestridge (Jeff), Laurie Green; grandchildren: Mark De Hertogh (Kelly), Dr. Lori Beth De Hertogh (Charles); grand-nephews and nieces; Seth Welsh, Jackson McDonald, Jason Lee, Juliana Prestridge and great grandchild Caroline De Hertogh Radcliffe.
Joanne fervently served her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in word and in deed, and touched many lives during her service for the Lord.
Family will be arranging a Celebration of Life Service to be held and announced at a later date possibly in November. The details will be available here on the funeral home’s website once completed.
