Laverne Scott Downs

Laverne Scott Downs passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 in Pascagoula, MS at the age of 92. Laverne was born in Crandall, MS on July 28, 1928 to James Coleman Scott and Mattie Carmichael. She started her career as a seamstress, working at the Bargain Annex, the Sewing Basket, Brumfield’s, and Coast Clothing Company. Laverne retired 45 years later, doing what she loved, at the age of 85. Laverne was an active member of Lighthouse Baptist Church. She loved spending her time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, who lovingly knew her as “Nene”.

Laverne is preceded in death by her mother and father; husband of 49 years, Davis Elmer Downs; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Laverne is survived by her sons, Larry Downs (Linda) of Spanish Fort, AL, and Garry Downs (Debbie) of Lucedale, MS; grandchildren Russell Downs (Jamie) of Jackson, GA, Randall Downs (Ashley) of Anthem, AZ, Jeramy Downs of Pascagoula, MS, and Jessica Downs of Biloxi, MS; great grandchildren Davis Downs of Georgia, and Helen Downs of Georgia. With a special thank you to the workers of Hospice of Light.

Services will be Friday, February 26, 2021 at O’Bryant O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula, at 11:00am with a visitation one hour prior with Bro. Jerry Reed and Bro. Albert Goss officiating. Interment will be held privately.

Due to the concerns of Covid-19, facial masks will need to be worn and social distancing necessary.
