Leroy Walker Foster, Sr., devoted husband, father, grandfather, and guiding light of the Foster family, passed away peacefully in Pascagoula on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at age 95. He was surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren. Born January 17, 1928 in Anacoca, Louisiana to Ivon Walker Foster and Roy Foster, Walker was moved to Pascagoula and raised by his grandparents and aunts after losing his mother at only one year of age. He graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1946 and enjoyed serving in the Boy Scouts of America, earning its highest honor of Eagle Scout. After high school, Walker joined the United States Army and served in World War II, assigned to the Army of Occupation in Japan, First Calvary Division, Eighth Regiment, and was recently recognized among other WWII veterans in Pascagoula as the city celebrated its designation as a WWII Heritage City by the National Parks Service. He later attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Engineering, and returned to Pascagoula to become the first Industrial Engineer at Ingalls Shipbuilding. He retired as Director of Estimating and Cost Engineering after 42 years of employment and was regarded among his peers and co-workers for his intelligence, leadership, and steadfast thoroughness and reliability. Walker spent his retirement leading Foster-Martin Family Enterprises, owners of Edd's Drive-In Pascagoula and Wade, as President, and was a lifelong faithful member of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula. Walker loved to travel and visited 14 countries while serving in the military, working for the shipyard, and vacationing with family, and was a proud Alabama football fan. However, his greatest love was for his family and faith. Walker was regarded as a pillar of faith in the Gulf Coast Catholic community alongside his wife, Joanne, and in his joy and kindness exuded the spirit of Christ in his presence with others. He and Joanne committed deeply to their faith and raised seven children within the Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church parish and Resurrection Catholic School communities. Their children then raised their own children in these same communities. The legacy Walker and Joanne have left among families of faith at OLV, RCS, and the broader Pascagoula community is indelible and will be felt long after the many years his loved ones were blessed to share with him on earth. Walker was known for his joyous smile and quiet patience and will be remembered by his family and friends as a man of God and mentor of utmost integrity, who in his lifetime created a most beautiful, love-filled family.
