Mattie Jo Gilly

Mattie Jo Johnson Gilly, age 92, of Pascagoula was born March 19, 1929, and left this world for her Heavenly home on October 31, 2020.

“They shall rise and call her Blessed.”  There has never been, nor will there ever be, another like her.  Our daddy called her “Mama” and she was the love of his life. He loved her at first sight. They were married October 30, 1949.

She left a legacy to her children and grandchildren that will live on forever. She loved her children, grandchildren and everyone that crossed her path.

Mom loved flowers and had an amazing green thumb. She loved music, crafts and puzzles. She loved getting together with family on holidays and special occasions.  The MOST special times were Sunday’s, when family and friends gathered for lunch at Mom’s. Mama’s smile and laughter will always be remembered by her family and friends.

Mom is preceded in death by the love of her life, Shannon Gilly Sr; Her parents Earnest and Ella Johnson. Siblings: Pearl (Lawrence) Gray, Earnest (Helen) Johnson, Ruby (Lloyd) Lofton, Harry Johnson, Will Johnson, Louise (Bruce) Snyder, Margaret (Leslie) Johnston, Catherine (Ferris) Purcell, Nell (Art) Hartman, Geraldine Peyrigne, Annette Bobadilla, and Ruth (Jay) Johnston; grandchildren: Brandon Waltman, Michael Gilly and Matthew Gilly.

She is survived and will never be forgotten by her children: Shannon Jr. (Buddy) and (Mary) Gilly, Mike Gilly (Karen-deceased), Wayne (Ruth) Gilly, Evelyn Waltman (William-deceased), Tish (Steve) MacInnis, Loretta (Tom) Kubalewski, Sue (Marty) Mullin, Paul, Beth (Steve) Seely; Grandchildren:  Nathan, Shannon, Josh (Michele), Jennifer (Les), Kelli (Steve), Bryan (Sydney), Derek, Jessica (David), Sean, Wendy, Gretchen (Victor), Britt (Russell), Keri (Matthew), Terry, Thomas (Amber), Mattie (Justen), Anna (Nick) Marette, Cassie and Emily. She was Blessed with many great grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Mom loved her Church and church family at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church.A special thanks to her “Brunch Bunch” for years of love and friendship.

Pallbearers: Shannon Gilly, Josh Gilly, Bryan Gilly, Russell Preston, Terry Kubalewski, Justen Eason, and Nick Marette. Honorary Pallbearers are Nathan Gilly and Derek Medjesky.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, 6:30-8:00pm, at O'Bryant-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula.  Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Nov. 6, 2020, 11:30, at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 at the church and Friends may visit from 10:00-11:30 prior to the service at the church. 

After the church mass, she will be laid to rest by her husband at Biloxi National Cemetery. Because the cemetery is only allowing a limited number to attend the cemetery service, the burial will be held privately for family only.

Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, masks will be required to be worn and social distancing will be necessary. You may send condolences to her family or share a memory on the Tribute Wall.
