Peggy Peterson Obituary

Peggy Elizabeth Baugh Peterson of Gautier went home to be with her Lord on March 4, 2020. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on June 23, 1939 but grew up in Columbus, MS. Her parents were Dr. Douglas Baugh and Mary Frances Jones Baugh of Columbus, MS.

Mrs. Peterson received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi State College for Women in 1961.  She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, an honorary music fraternity. Mrs. Peterson served as the queen of the Columbus, Mississippi Junior Auxiliary Pilgrimage Ball in 1961.   She taught public school music at Central Elementary School in Pascagoula from 1961-1962. Mrs. Peterson began teaching private piano lessons in her home after her marriage to Ray Peterson in 1962. She taught piano lessons for 58 years and was a substitute teacher from 1972-1985 in the Pascagoula Public Schools.

Mrs. Peggy was a member of the Gulf Coast Music Teacher Association where she served as secretary, vice president and president, the Mississippi Music Teachers Association and the National Music Teachers Association.

Mrs. Peterson was an active member of First Baptist Church Gautier serving as organist for 30 years. She was also a director of the hand bell choir, a member of WMU, Senior Adult Ministries, a grader with the Prison Evangelism Outreach and was a member of the Disaster Relief Team. Peggy served in the nursery for bed babies for 22 years. She was a member of Hemmed in Prayer at First Baptist Church in Pascagoula. She was also a volunteer with Singing River Hospital Auxiliary for 25 years and for a while volunteered at Volunteer in Medicine Gautier, the Red Cross and Sue's home.

Mrs. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Douglas  and Mary Frances Jones Baugh of Columbus, Ms., her sister, Marjorie Baugh Doster and her husband, Dr. Jim Doster of Columbus, and brother-in-law Scott Tycer of  Brentwood, Tn., father-in-law and mother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Otto Peterson, Sr., brother-in-law and sister-in-law Otto and Martha Peterson Jr, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Warner and Norma Jean Peterson, and brother-in-law Earl Hubley, all of Gautier, MS. She is survived by her faithful and loving husband Melvin Ray Peterson, daughter Twila Peterson, son and daughter-in-law Melvin and Courtney Peterson Jr, and grandchildren Madeline and Jameson Muse of Brentwood, TN, sister Ann Douglas Tycer, also of Brentwood, TN, sister-in-law Mary Elsie Hubley, sister-in-law Peggy Greene and her husband Walter Greene.

Visitations will be Friday March 6, 2020, 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at O’Bryant O’Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday,  March 7, 2020,  10:00 A.M. at First Baptist Church in Gautier with Brother David Aultman will officiate. Interment will be in Pinecrest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Backback Buddies at First Baptist Church Gautier 325 De La Pointe Drive, Gautier Ms. 39553, or the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Hamp Jones, Mark Peterson, Dr. Rhett Hubley, Greg Hubley, Wendell Greene, and Durwood Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be, Walter Greene, Joshua Tycer, Micah Tycer, Garrett Pate, Mark Roy, Tommy McDaniel, Mike Foster, and the Joy Sunday School Class of FBCG.  You may send condolences to her family or share a memory at www.obryantokeefe.com
