Philip Scott Sr Obituary

Philip Cornelius Scott was born April 23, 1940 in Pascagoula, Mississippi and died on June 2, 2020 after a 5-year battle with Dementia.

He is preceded in death by his father Harold Burnham Scott, mother Yvonne Davis Scott,  and brothers Harold Burnham Scott, Jr. and John Davis Scott.

Philip is survived by his devoted and loving wife Carleen Scott (nee′ Hateley), his children Nyka Scott  of New Orleans, Philip Scott, Jr. (Rebecca), Suzanne Scott, and Kelli Johnson of Pascagoula, grandchildren Hannah Scott, Cecily Johnson, Tai Johnson, Kasey Edwards and Taylor Atwell, sisters Marie Walker, Mary Lee Williams (Mark) and Sally Monroe (David), sisters-in-law Janelle Kelly, Vivian “Mimm” Bilbo, Lana Kay Miller and Juanese Adams (Ricky), a host of cousins, nieces and nephews, and a very dear lifelong friend Noel B. “Buck” Buckley.

Philip was a lifelong resident of Pascagoula, Mississippi. He attended Pascagoula High School where he was a star athlete, playing football, baseball, basketball, golf and running track.  After graduation, he attended Perkinston Junior College on a football scholarship.  After leaving Perk, he joined the United States Navy where he served aboard the nuclear submarine, the USS DACE, as a Sonarman.  While serving his country, he lived in Japan and Hawaii where he was a frequent golf partner of the Admiral.  Philip also received the prestigious American Spirit Award, which is given to one recruit of all graduating companies who “best exemplified the outstanding qualities of leadership expressing the American spirit – honor, loyalty initiative and high example to comrades in arms.”

Philip was a life-long resident of Pascagoula, Mississippi, working as an Electrical Superintendent at Ingalls Shipbuilding.  He was affectionately known as “PC,” and he had the reputation as an extremely hard worker and a boss who always treated everyone fairly.  He retired after 35 years to stay home and take care of his grandchildren.

The two most important things to Philip were family and fishing – in that order.  He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and son.  He  attended every ball game, concert, recital or any event involving his grandchildren.  His love of sports led him to coach his son in football and baseball, and his favorite saying was “get the lead out.”  Coaching led him to a life-long friendship with Buck Buckley, and there was nothing more entertaining than the two of them coaching a little league game. Philip was also a lifelong bass fisherman, rising as early as 2 am (often times busting his children coming home late) to catch the “big one.”  He enjoyed his time as a member of the Bassmasters Club where he served as President, and there are too many fish tales to list here.
