Richard A. Wheat, age 79 of Ocean Springs passed away on Monday, April 27, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
He was born February 22, 1941 in Petal, MS and grew up in Brooklyn, MS. Richard was a retired computer programmer and retired song leader of several local churches. Richard’s love for God, Gospel Music, his adoring wife and family, made him the wonderful man he was. Not only was he loved by his family but by so many friends, neighbors and especially his church family. Richard was known for his rich baritone voice. He performed much of his life singing in gospel groups, such as Hub City Quartet, The Family Quartet and The Singing River Quartet. He never grew tired of singing praises for the Lord.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and Candice Leah Wheat; brother, Howard Wheat, and granddaughter, Alyssa Stork.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kay McVeay-Wheat; siblings, Dale (Priscilla) Wheat and Elane (Hakeem) Isa; 7 children, Brian Wheat, Billy Stork (Venus), Kristina Wheat, Staci ( Harold) Norwood, Desiree ( Jose) Orellana, Alica (Ivory) Stewart and Renee Rutland; 21 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Honorary Pallbearers are Walter Grater, Sam Jones, Jerry Sullivan, Dude Scarbrough, Olly McVeay and John Young Sr.
Private Graveside Service will be Saturday at 2PM with Rev. Brian Miller officiating. The graveside service will be live-streamed through O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home Facebook page.
