Sara Adelaide Murphey Megehee was born January 17, 1932 in Macon, Mississippi to Arthur Gage Murphey and Jennie Elizabeth Crutcher Murphey. Sara died peacefully in her home on May 4th, 2026 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Sara graduated from Macon High School where she was Miss Macon High. She attended Belhaven College her freshman year and transferred to the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss she was a Journalism major and a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity. She graduated in 1954 and moved to Pascagoula to work for The Chronicle Star newspaper. She met a young gentleman named Carl Megehee at the Longfellow House swimming pool. They were married on December 29, 1954 in Macon, Mississippi at the Church of the Nativity.
Sara was very involved in the Pascagoula community. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild, was a Lay Eucharistic Visitor, and a
Lector. She was also a member of the Daughters of the King Prayer Group. She also served as a Charter Member and President of the Pascagoula-Moss Point Junior Auxiliary. She was a member of the Duchess de Chaumont Chapter of the DAR. She was also a President of the Pilgrimage Garden Club. Further, she was a member of Monday’s Book Club. She and Carl enjoyed many evenings with friends at the Singing River Yacht Club. The family could often be found on Horn Island on weekends in the warmer months. Fall weekends were filled with Ole Miss football games.
In her final golden years, Sara enjoyed her exercise class, attending happy hour, sitting by the pool, and playing Rummikub with friends in her Seagrass Village community.
Sara had many accomplishments in addition to the ones listed above, but her greatest joy came from raising a family with her beloved husband of 69 years, Carl. They raised three daughters in their Beach Boulevard home and later welcomed four grandchildren, who loved enjoying summers with their grandparents on the waterfront. Sara will be remembered by those closest to her as a warm and loving mother and grandmother, and a fun-loving great-grandmother.
Sara is survived by her daughters, Maribeth (Peter) Howard, Carol (Arch) Woodside, and Jane (William) Douglas; and granddaughters, Sara (Garrett) Morris, Caroline (Skylar) Hansen, Elizabeth Douglas, and Haley (Rod) Kellogg; and grandsons Marcus Howard, Kristopher Howard, and Nicolas Howard; and great-grandchildren Ryder and Rhet Howard, Maddox and Alexis Morris, Saylor, Ollie, and Piper Hansen, and Liam, Colvin, Lilly, and Callum Kellogg.
The family would like to give special thanks to Sara’s caregivers Felicia Walker, Octavia Sutton, Jackeria King, and Kayla Travis, and Southern Care Hospice for the care they gave her during
her final months.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, May 12th, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 3507 Pine St., Pascagoula, MS with visitation one hour prior to service.
