Stanley Shields Sr. Obituary

Stanley Vernon Shields, Sr. passed away peacefully January 11th 2025 at Singing River Hospital at the age of 82.

Born October 19, 1942 in Kreole, Mississippi to Edgar Vernon Shields and Bertel Pittman Shields Kilgo. He was a graduate of Moss Point Central High School in 1961. Moved to the Forts Lake community in 1967 and has continued in residence in Forts Lake for 57 years. 

After graduation from Moss Point Central High School, he entered the Army (“61-”67), he was in Fort Hood, Texas during the Cuban Crisis, and then served at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. Upon returning home he was employed by Mississippi Chemical Company (MCC) while also finishing his term in the Army reserves. He continued working at MCC from 1965 until 1984 when he retired as the Safety Inspector. During this time, he also volunteered at the Franklin Creek/Forts Lake Fire Department serving as Fire Chief. He and his wife (Brenda) ran the Tastee Freezee in Gautier, MS and Home Port Video-Gally in the Forts Lake Community from 1985 until 1995. Prior to retiring in 2007 he worked for Jackson County Maintenance Department as an Electrician. He enjoyed woodwork crafts, gardening, and growing various fruit trees at his Forts Lake home. After his retirement, he served Jackson County on the Fire Commission Board and enjoyed his hobbies and grandchildren. 

Preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Lewis Kilgo, sisters; Anita Dee Shields Robertson and Carolyn Orine Shields Ballinger, brothers-in-law; Don Wayne Dozier, James Ray Robertson, Gerald Dean Ballinger; nephew, Austin Dean Ballinger and niece, Rhonda Arlene Robertson Just.

Survived by wife Brenda Diane Owens Shields of 60 years, sister Louise Annette Shields Dozier Boss, and his 3 children: daughters, Ladonna Anne Shields (James Lee) Crowder and Dorothy Diane Shields, and son,Stanley Vernon Shields Jr. (Donna Chenning); Grandchildren: Ryann Johnson, Lidell Crowder, Tyler DeBord, Tabatha DeBord, MaryBeth DeBord, Tobey DeBord; Great grandchildren: Evan Johnson and Ryley Chastain, along with other nieces and nephews and many cousins. 

Visitation will be Friday, January 17, 2025 at O’Bryant-O’Keefe Funeral Home from 10Am- 12 noon.    Graveside Service with military honors will conclude at W.R. Clark Cemetery in the Forts Lake Community at 1:00PM.
