Tommy Smith Obituary

Mr. Tommy E. Smith passed away Monday morning surrounded by his family. Born September 9, 1942 in Meridian, MS, Tommy had been a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast either full or part-time since 1965. He was an independent self-made person. He graduated from Redwood High School just north of Vicksburg, MS, where he was an undersized running back with a tough as nails mentality. Tommy put himself through Mississippi State University earning an electrical engineering degree. He loved MSU and more importantly to him, he loved his MSU Bulldog athletics, to whom he was loyal until the end. Following graduation, Tommy went to work for Mississippi Power and found himself in Moss Point, MS in a position that would change his life forever. He met the love of his life Ms. Sandra Perkins. They were married on July 1, 1966 in Moss Point and would spend the next 58 years together. Tommy’s professional career with Mississippi Power spanned more than 30 years and several moves. Each one of those moves required Sandra “having” to remodel their new home much to his angst. He rose through the ranks from junior engineer to Power Generation and Services Director before his retirement in 1998. He and Sandra had wonderful love and laugh-filled life together. She preceded him in death on July 5, 2024.

In addition to his parents and wife he is preceded in death by two brother-in-law,: Richie Perkins and Jim Miles.

Left to cherish their memories are his daughter, Glynis Smith Gutherz and her husband Robert “Boo” of Ocean Springs, MS; his son Kyle and his wife Barry Wise Smith of Homewood, AL; brother-in-law Weldon Perkins his wife Pam of Ocean Springs, MS; sister-in-law Debbie Miles of Ocean Springs, MS; sister-in-law Marty Perkins of Moss Point, MS; five grandchildren, Elizabeth McDonough and her husband Scott; Shelby Geboy and her husband Tommy; Tess Stockdale and her husband James; Thomas Smith and his fiancée Anne Langford Drake; Hardy Smith; great grandchildren, Eliza and Hattie McDonough, Harvey and Delilah Stockdale, Millie Jo and soon to be Baby Boy Geboy.
